Lithuanian Official Condemns Effort to Stir Prejudice Against Jews

Publication of an anti-Semitic article in the Government organ, Lietuvos Aidas, denotes no change in the Government’s Jewish policy, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency was told today by the Government Press Director. The article, published last week, had urged establishment of “ghetto” beaches for Jews at Lithuanian resorts. Its publication resulted in a number of minor incidents at bathing resorts. Polanga, largest seaside resort in Lithuania, has sprouted anti-Jewish posters calling upon Lithuanians to beat up Jews.

The press official declared in his statement: “It is highly desirable that relations between Jews and Lithuanians remain friendly. The Government intends to remove anything threatening these relations. The views of individuals and small groups are not to be regarded as the view of the whole country.”
