Jews Barred from Leaving Homes Without Permits in Austrian Towns

The authorities in small towns of Austria are not permitting Jews to leave their houses without a permit. A copy of a permit received here bears the stamp “NSDAP” (National-Sozialistiche Deutsche Arbeiter Partei, or Nazi Party) with the signature of the town’s Nazi leader. In one case the “Aryan” wife of a Jew was denied permission to visit her parents in a nearby village. In another case a Jewish woman was not permitted to leave her house unless her child was left as hostage.

A thousand Vienna Jews are planning to emigrate to Paraguay to take up the Government’s offer of free land for colonization. They are planning to charter a vessel for the trip and are now negotiating for permission to take out of the country agricultural equipment.
