Five attempts at suicide in a week, three of them successful — including a 76-year-old woman — served today to illustrate the feeling of hopelessness prevailing among Austrian Jewish refugees, pressed by the authorities to leave Switzerland and unable to obtain visas for other countries. A number of refugees, refused extension of their stay in Switzerland and, unable to emigrate elsewhere, have enlisted in the French Foreign Legion.
