Declaring the Jews’ economic achievements in Palestine had won the regard of the whole civilized world, six clergymen representing the Anglican, Baptist and United churches cabled an appeal to Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain against a change in Great Britain’s policy on Palestine and the Jewish national home. The cable warned that abandonment of the Balfour Declaration would be an “immense blow” to British prestige and would ruin the hopes of thousands of victims of “blind hatred” who were looking to Palestine as a sole refuge.
