The German Government has for the first time negotiated directly with several South American and Central American republics regarding mass transfer of Reich Jews, it was reported today.
The negotiations have reportedly reached an advanced stage with the Dominican Republic which is said to be prepared to accept “all Jews wanting to come.” It is believed that the Dominican Republic demands that the emigrants be permitted to take out a minimum amount of capital, possibly in return for the extending of a trade agreement to Germany.
Jews have not been advised of these negotiations. The reported negotiations were interpreted in some quarters as a result of the powerful American and European reaction to recent occurrences.
Many influential Nazis are dismayed at the increasing strain on American-German relations, and also the bad effect of the events on the British appeasement policy. Propaganda Minister Paul Joseph Goebbels’ speech yesterday in Sudetenland, in which he declared, “We do not want to export anti-Semitism; we want to export Jews,” was interpreted as indicative of the new trend.
