Jerome Tharaud, novelist whose works have brought him under suspicion as anti-Semitic, was yesterday elected to the French Academy by a vote of 19 to 11, with one abstention. Tharaud, who writes in collaboration with his younger brother Jean, is the author of such works as “Quand Israel est Roi” (When Israel is King) and “L’An Prochain a Jerusalem” (Next Year in Jerusalem) as well as many other books of fiction and essays.
