After three unsuccessful attempts, Arab terrorists today shot and killed Haj Machmud el Ansari, keeper of the El Aksa Mosque and a prominent Arab moderate. The assassination climaxed another 24 hours of terrorism which resulted in the killing of a British lance corporal, the wounding of two other soldiers and at least two Jews. The soldier was killed in an ambush near Balaa. The Jews were wounded in attacks at Haifa.

Brigadier-General John Evetts today put the Haifa harbor area under permanent 16-hour curfew, from five p.m. to nine a.m. Striking Arab shops in the Suq, Haifa’s vegetable market, were at the same time ordered to reopen under the emergency regulations.
