Pointing out that a century ago Britain paid $20,000,000 to its slave-owners to secure abolition, Dr. Herbert Hensley Henson, Bishop of Durham, tonight urged large-scale Jewish colonization within the empire with Government financial assistance.

Thanking representatives of the Jewish communities in the Diocese who called on him at Auckland Castle to present to him a certificate of inscription in the Golden Book of the Jewish National Fund, he said:

“I feel sure that the Government would be supported by public opinion throughout the Empire if it accepted large financial responsibility in order to enable large-scale colonization of Jews in the Empire, and I believe the policy would be as wise as the motive would be right. It is apparent that Palestine alone cannot solve the practical problem. The Jewish nation must find a home partially, nay, mainly, outside Palestine.”
