Senator William H. King has proposed that the United States sever diplomatic and commercial relations with Germany on the ground that Hitler’s support in Germany apparently rested on “his ruthless ability to stimulate economic activity within Germany for those who are his followers.”
Senator King’s proposal followed a statement by Senator Key Pittman, chairman of the senate foreign affairs committee, which said that “the people of the united states do not like the government of Germany” as well as that of Japan, and opposed any form of dictatorial government. He added: “The people of the United States have the right and power to enforce morality and justice in accordance with peace treaties with us. Our Government does not have to use military force and will not unless necessary.”
