A pessimistic picture of prospects for refugee colonization in British Guiana is painted in an article in the Feb. 23 issue of Ken magazine under the pseudonym “Panamericus.” The writer, speaking from personal experience in the colony, asserts: “Though many eager men have tried it no man, all down through Guiana’s long history of ‘inviting colonization,’ has ever been able to defeat the natural handicaps of the lost interior. These men were all pioneers, used to hardships, natural handicaps. If they couldn’t make a semi-prosperity of Guiana’s interior, nobody can.” The article is entitled “Guiana — The Gift Horse.”
