About 3,000 women take the field tomorrow in the emergency campaign of the New York United Jewish Appeal for Refugees and Overseas Needs. The Women’s Division of the emergency drive was launched today with a conference attended by 2,600 women at the Hotel Waldorf-Astoria. They heard Miss Dorothy Thompson, the columnist, describe the situation in Europe today “as the gravest crisis to face the world since the Fourth Century, when the Roman Empire fell.” She said “This is not simply a Jewish question, nor a question of Jewish refugees. The world has got to see that we are facing not only the possibility of war, but the possibility of total chaos. You must keep this chaos from spreading. I see civilization itself at stake in the world today.” Mrs. Herbert H. Lehman was among the other speakers.
