A complete solution of the refugee problem would require “hundreds and even thousands of millions of pounds,” it was declared today by Lord Winterton, chairman of the Intergovernmental Refugee Committee, in commenting on criticism of the policy on refugees.
“If the Evian Governments,” he said, “had accepted responsibility there would have been an immediate revolt by the taxpayers of all countries; voluntary funds would not have been forthcoming; the German Government would have had no motive for facilitating transfer of part of the refugees’ wealth and there would have been a sharp cleavage of opinion when united action was the aim of the conference.”
Lord Winterton, speaking at Worthing, Sussex, voiced the hope that the committee had achieved in the past nine months could be “doubled and trebled” in the ensuing months.
