The military commander for Jerusalem district punished the Jews for the bombings by suspending three more Jewish bus routes– those to the Old City, Boukharian and Kerem Abraham quarters — thus leaving all main routes closed, except for the lines to distant suburbs. Thousands of Jews will be forced to walk by Arab quarters where hundreds of Jews have been killed and wounded in the past three years.
In Haifa, a Jewish engineer, Michael Wechsler, of the Public Works Department, was injured by Arab shots.
The burst of disorders came as the Palestine authorities closed the books on a month in which 75 persons were killed and 296 wounded. Of the total killed in May disorders, 60 were Arabs, 11 Jews and 4 British, including 2 policemen, a military officer and a journalist. Of the 296 wounded, 67 were Arabs, of whom 3 were police, 205 were Jews and 23 were British, including 13 police. Ninety-five villages were searched, 200 arrests were made and £1,120 in fines were imposed. Three-hundred firearms and 74,000 cartridges were seized. Courts martial tried 39 cases and pronounced 11 death sentences, of which 6 were confirmed.
