The 31st National Conference of Jewish Social Welfare opened tonight at the Hotel Statler with more than 500 social workers from various parts of the country attending. Rabbi Milton Steinberg of New York stressed the Jews’ right to a distinctive culture and the contribution which this culture make to American life.

More than 28 sessions are scheduled for the four-day conference. The National Association of Jewish Center Executives and the National Council for Jewish Education are holding concurrent meetings. The conference will be occupied chiefly with the changing status of Jewish life in America.
