Representatives of the larger Jewish communities in Poland will hold a conference here shortly on the refugee problem, with the liquidation of the Zbonszyn camp, which still houses 1,000 of an original 5,000 refugees, among the principal topics to be discussed.
Another 4,000 refugees are expected to arrive in the near future when deportees who were allowed to return to Germany under the German-Polish agreement permitting them to liquidate their possessions are scheduled to come back to Poland. They had been given until July 31 to settle their affairs in Germany.
A priest, Father John Buckingham, who is a member of an American Christian delegation touring Europe to help refugees, has arrived here. Addressing a crowd of refugees at the offices of the Jewish Refugee Committee, he distributed money and promised to arrange for emigration of a group of young exiles from Poland to the United States.
A broken heart brought on by her terrible experiences before leaving Germany was held responsible today for the death of a Jewish refugee woman, a Mrs. Reisfeld. When given notice to leave Germany recently. Mrs. Reisfeld was ordered by the Gestapo to go to the Dachau concentration camp “to fetch her husband,” who had been interned last year following confiscation of his property.
Arriving joyously at Dachau in expectation of her husband’s release, she was told to wait and Mr. Reisfeld would appear immediately. Shortly thereafter a box containing her husband’s ashes was brought in and handed to her. At the funeral here yesterday, the box of ashes was carried by the Reisfeld children behind the coffin and buried in the same grave.
