No general amnesty for Jews in Palestine concentration camps is planned, but "each case is under review," Colonial Secretary Malcolm MacDonald told the House of Commons today.
MacDonald was asked by Col. Josiah Wedgwood, Laborite, whether, since the Jews had offered their help to the British Government, he would now set free unconvicted Jews imprisoned so long in concentration camps. Col. Wedgwood also asked how many Jews and Arabs were still confined.
"With regard to the first part of the question," MacDonald replied, "I cannot give a general undertaking. Each case must be considered on its merits and each case is under review. On Aug. 26, the last date on which I have figures, 1,700 Arabs and 175 Jews were detained under the emergency regulations."
The Colonial Secretary also declared: "I am glad to say we have received assurances of support from both the Jewish and the Arab sections of the population."
