Unjustified attacks against Jews for allegedly occupying too many paid posts in connection with the civil defense were strongly denounced by the mayor of Newport at a meeting of the town council.
Referring in vigorous terms to “carping critics” who make “scandalous statements,” the mayor revealed that all Jews engaged in Air Raid Precautions work had returned their salaries to him, and had intimated that they would continue to do so every week. The official added that the Jews had also placed a synagogue at his disposal for the national service without charge.
