Racial and religious intolerance was termed “un-American, uncharitable, unnatural and inhuman” in a recent address by Bishop Molloy of Brooklyn before 1,200 Catholic teachers attending the opening of the school year at St. James Pro-Cathedral.
Citing the advantages of democracy and denouncing “oppressive totalitarian doctrines,” the Bishop warned against “falsely alluring and even wickedly suggestive” proposals for economic and political relief “by hating, persecuting and exiling certain members of our great group of common citizenry.”
“We rightly reject and absolutely abhor any such proposal, ” he said, “since it is un-American, uncharitable, unnatural and inhuman.”
The Bishop, urging tolerance for all regardless of race, creed and color, cited pronouncements in that connection made by the late Pope Pius XI and the “distinguished Governor of our State” (Herbert H. Lehman).
