Nazi newspapers from Vienna reaching Paris today carry the text of an order issued by Governor Josef Buerckel requiring Jews to make their purchases in retail stores and artisan shops during specially-restricted hours.
The papers also reported the sentencing to two months’ imprisonment of several Jews converted to Catholicism for entering a cinema, since entry to amusement places is forbidden to persons of Jewish descent.
Governor Buerckel’s order permits only two hours for Jews to enter grocery stores, bakeries and other food stores. The order reads:
“Gauleiter Buerckel has ordered that in retail stores of all kinds in Vienna merchandise should be sold to Jews at certain hours only. The hours during which Jews are permitted to do shopping are, until further notice, as follows:
“1. The Jews may enter grocery stores, bakeries, butcher shops and other food shops in the Second and Twentieth Districts of Vienna from 11 until one o’clock; in all other sections from four until five o’clock. The delivery of food-stuff to Jews is strictly prohibited.
“2. In retail shops selling commodities other than foodstuffs, Jews are permitted to do their shopping from two to four o’clock, except in the Second, Ninth and Twentieth Districts of the city, where they may do their shopping from 11 to four o’clock.
“3. In artisan shops, Jews may enter from five until six o’clock, except in the Second, Ninth and Twentieth Districts of the city, where they may enter from four to six o’clock.”
The order warns retailers that they will be punished and may lose their licenses for violation of its provisions.
