A cherem (excommunication) proclaimed by Lithuanian rabbis against Jewish purchasers of goods stolen from refugees attempting to cross the Russian border has resulted in the return of a large part of the booty, it was disclosed here today. The cherem followed an epidemic of such robberies by peasant guides, who sold the stolen goods to Jewish merchants in the frontier town of Eisziszki.
