Declaring that the war in Europe has placed upon American Jews the major share of the burden of sustaining hope and life for millions of Jews in distress, Dr. Cyrus Adler, president of the American Jewish Committee, today called upon Jewish communities in the United States to increase their support of the United Jewish Appeal and to intensify the three-fold program of relief and rehabilitation overseas, immigration and settlement in Palestine and refugee adjustment in the United States.
Dr. Adler pledged the utmost cooperation of the American Jewish Committee with the United Jewish Appeal in a letter addressed to Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver and Rabbi Jonah B. Wise, national chairmen.
“The tragedy that has befallen the Polish nation as a result of the Nazi conquest,” Dr. Adler said in his letter, “has brought unparalleled and indescribable suffering to the Jews of that country. Relief must be provided to Polish Jews to the fullest extent humanly possible, if millions are not to perish for want of food. At the same time, all efforts in the direction of rehabilitating other stricken communities, upbuilding Palestine and assisting refugees, must be continued and even intensified.”
An appeal to Protestants, Catholics and Jews to unite in the common task of human rescue and succor to save those in distress as well as to “reintegrate the shattered spiritual life of the world” was sounded by Dr. Thomas Mann, noted author, Bishop Bernard J. Sheil of Chicago, and National Chairmen Abba Hillel Silver and Jonah B. Wise, in a nationwide broadcast last night over the National Broadcasting Company. The broadcast marked the opening of campaigns in scores of communities in behalf of the United Jewish Appeal.
