Extension of the war to the Near East will find Palestine with a sufficient quantity of vital commodities on hand, it was announced today by the controller of supplies.
There is, however, likely to be a shortage of luxury articles of the sort mostly used by Europeans, it was indicated. Included in this category are such things as white flour and tinned foods imported from abroad.
Palestine is expected to become self-sufficient with respect to cotton and woolen yarns as the result of the opening of the country’s first fully automatic cotton waste and wool spinning mill at Ramat Gan, near Tel Aviv. The plant contains two sets of the latest British and Belgian machinery to produce high and low-count yarns and will begin production on an annual capacity basis of 200,000 to 250,000 kilograms.
Up to the present, 90 percent of the country’s yarn requirements had to be filled through imports and local production by comparatively primitive methods. Should local and export demands increase, it is stated, the plant’s capacity can be expanded. The main market for the low-count yarns will be mills for weaving blankets and rugs, and for the higher count yarns the hosiery manufacturers.
The new factory has been established by Kishor, Ltd. Its manager is M. Perytz, who formerly owned a large spinning mill in Czecho-Slovakia.
