Alfred Wagg, economist who has specialized in the agricultural problems of Latin American Nations, today was named Assistant Secretary of the Intergovernmental Committee on Refugees and received the oath at the State Department.
He will take over the duties of Stephen Morris, secretary, who has been assigned to another post in the State Department. Morris will hold the title of secretary until the next meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee.
Wagg, who has just returned from the Dominican Republic, said today that the Sosua colonization project “is final proof that the canard that Jews do not make good farmers is false.” Within six months the colonists, now numbering nearly 50, have placed 600 acres under cultivation, he said.
“Among them are scientists who adapted their talents to raising pedigreed chickens in modern incubators of their own invention,” Wagg added. “They have accumulated 350 head of livestock and are making 150 pounds of cheese daily. They are operating with tractors and the most modern means of cultivation.”
