A number of synagogues which had been closed were reopened following a conference between Vice-Premier Horia Sima and Dr. William Filderman president of the Union of Rumanian Jews, and Chief Rabbi Safran.
The conference, centering on the new decree ruling that all synagogues and temples could be used for services only under special permission from the Government, followed meetings between Dr. Filderman and Premier Ion Antonescu and Interior Minister David Popescu.
At the latest meeting, Sima said the authorities would “watch and assist peaceful development of the Jewish religion.” The minister asked for statistics regarding the number of synagogues and the number of Jews grouped around each in order to change the law to conform to the proportion of Jews in each city.
The Rumanian Bar Association is continuing to eliminate Jews not covered by exemption clauses. The Association of Engineers is ousting all Jews from its ranks.
