The popular Air Raids Precaution warden Wisenthal lost an eye while saving the life of a man during an air raid here. The Jewish warden had been nicknamed “Grandpa” for the manner in which he comforted children in air raid shelters. He was for many years an Orthodox cook aboard Cunard-White Star liners.
