Wholesale expulsion of Jews from the Maramcros region of Northern Transylvania was reported here tonight.

The military authorities, according to reports, have been rounding up indigent Jews and escorting them to the nearby Soviet frontier, forcing them at pistol point to cross into Russian territory. The Russo-Hungarian frontier in this region is formed by desolate ridges in the Carpathian mountains, very sparsely patrolled by Soviet frontier guards.

When the Jews protested against the expulsions the authorities were reported to have declared that they were not Hungarian citizens and therefore had no right to remain in the newly-acquired Hungarian territory of Transylvania.
