An extraordinary session of the Asefath Hanivcharim (Jewish National Assembly)., summoned for the first time to discuss the urgent problem of the Danubian refugees, was opened today by Isaac Ben-Zvi, president of the Vaad Leumi (Jewish National Council), who stressed the urgency and importance of an agenda calling for unified action.
Moshe Shertok, head of the Jewish Agency’s political department, reported on the political situation and steps undertaken by Jewish institutions. Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog, Dr. M. Altman of the Zionist-Revisionists, Rabbi Meir Berlin of the Mizrachi Organization and representatives of other groups made declarations, after which the assembly, displaying unprecedented unity, unanimously adopted a resolution proposed by the Vaad Leumi executive.
The meeting followed intensive political activities yesterday, when representatives of Jewish bodies met in special separate sessions to discuss the situation regarding immigration and the refugee question. The executives of the Vaad Leumi and the Jewish Agency and the Palestine commission of the Zionist General Council also met.
The Tel Aviv Municipal Council adopted a resolution to approach the District Commissioner and to seek an urgent interview with High Commissioner Sir Harold A. MacMichael.
