The Catholic newspaper Universe today praised the Jewish owned Cavendish furniture stores in London’s West End for donating use of its showrooms to a Catholic parish whose church had been destroyed by a bombing.
“Jewish munificence is being exercised not for the first time in London’s history in favor of the Catholic community,” the paper said.
The showrooms will be used pending restoration of the church. When the canon asked at what terms the building could be leased, the proprietor answered: “You can have it for nothing.” Subsequently an annual rental of one shilling was agreed upon to overcome legal difficulties. The normal rental is £6,000.
