Bulgaria’s 50,000 Jews prepared today to register their property with the National Bank, following passage by Parliament of this country’s first anti-Jewish law. The registration must be completed within a month after the effective date of the law.
The bill, adopted under German pressure, serves to make the Jews “second-class citizens” and contains restrictions on the Jews’ economic activities. Exempt from its provisions are Jews who joined the Bulgarian Orthodox Church before Dec. 1. Adoption of the bill was preceded by a stormy debate in Parliament.
