Chancellor Hitler charged that the war “was forced on Germany by British Imperialism and by Jewish finance and capital” in a statement to the German people early today on the Yugoslav developments, according to a resume of the statement picked up by the Columbia Broadcasting System’s short-wave listening station.
It was recalled here that the Chancellor had blamed “Jewish plutocratic and democratic upper crust” for the war in a statement to the German people when it started in September, 1939. The same accusations were made when the Nazis attacked Norway, Holland and other countries.
In his declaration today Hitler said “the present Yugoslav Government is ruled by the same dark forces which once before inflamed Europe and led the continent into a war through the Sarajevo incident,” according to the listening station resume.
There are 75,000 Jews in Yugoslavia, half of them located in Belgrade, Zagreb and Sarajevo. There is a small number in Slovenia and virtually none in Montenegro. The 12,000 Jews of Zagreb began hurried evacuation of the town for interior points during recent days owing to fears of a German invasion.
