Captain James Roosevelt, United States air observer, leaves Palestine today with a message from kindergarten children to President Roosevelt hailing him as “the good grandfather of children the world over.” The message, in the form of an illustrated album, was presented to Captain Roosevelt by a girl, in the name of her fellow-pupils, when he visited the Jewish colony, Dagania Aleph. Later, when he visited the Ashdoth Yaakov settlement, school children met with him flowers.
From Ashdoth he flew to Ein Hashofet (The Judge’s Well), American Jewish colony named for ex-Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis, where he expressed himself as impressed with the settlement’s development. He remarked that he was sorry his mother was not there, that she would be glad to see the fine results of four years’ work and voiced the hope that he could visit Palestine with his mother after the war.
In the course of his visit Captain Roosevelt flew in a plane of the Aviron Company, expressed interest in the development of Jewish aviation and praised the Jewish pilot, Zukerberg. He also visited the Hebrew University and was escorted by President Judah L. Magnes, to a Bible lecture.
