Assuming his new post as Executive Director of the National Refugee Service, Albert Abrahamson, former professor of economics at Bowdoin College, in a statement, clarified the general matter of refugee admission into the United States. “There has been much misunderstanding and anxiety in recent weeks concerning new State Department regulations on immigration. However, the National Refugee Service believes that refugee migration will be maintained at the same level as hereto fore – that is, between 2,000 and 3,000 a month. The centralization of visa issuance in the State Department at Washington will enable American social agencies – including the National Refugee Service – to render greater services to potential refugees and their friends and relatives in America. It is understood that each application for a visa will be handled on an individual basis, sympathetically and quickly”.
