The French Commissariat on Jewish affairs issued a statement today which is designed to reduce the hopes of many Jews who had expected to be exempted from the “Jewish Law” on account of special merit or war service.
The statement indicates that the exemptions would be granted only in the most exceptional instances. They will be limited to “particularly interesting cases”. Examination of these instances, it was said, would be most thorough. It was added, that even if a Jew did obtain such exemption, “this by no means liberates him or his family from all consequences resulting from his juridical status as Jews”.
The Commissariat also announced that Jews who wish to apply for exemption must fill out a regular legal form provided for this procedure. The Commissariat has received innumerable requests, but all such queries will be ignored, which are not presented in the required legal manner, the announcement stated.
