A suggestion that the State Department make arrangements with Pope Pius XIII for the purpose of establishing a USA immigration office in the Vatican City is now under discussion here in circles interested in refugee emigration, it was learned today.
The suggestion came up as result of the closing of the American consulates in Italy. It is being recalled here that Myron C. Taylor is still considered the representative of President Roosevelt to the Vatican, and it is pointed out that the establishment of a visa office at Taylor’s office would facilitate the eventual departure to the United States of many refugees.
The immediate result of the closing down of the American consulates in Italy has been the sending of 130 foreign-born Jews to concentration camps in southern Italy. These refugees had been interned since July 1940 but were recently released so that they might proceed to Rome to obtain the American visas to which they were entitled.
