The second contingent of refugees rescued from Africa by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee arrived here on Saturday aboard the steamer Nyassa.
The Nyassa carried about 600 passengers of whom 400 embarked at Lisbon and the other 200 at Casablanca in French Morocco. The Lisbon passengers are emigrants from various parts of Europe, many of whom were booked by the Joint Distribution Committee on behalf of its beneficiary committees abroad. Those who boarded the Nyassa at Casablanca were part of the group originally totalling some 1,500 who were interned in French Morocco for periods up to six months.
To cope with the shortage of steamship accommodations the JDC took “block bookings” on Spanish and Portuguese vessels. It made these accommodations available to the Jewish organizations and emigration committees cooperating with it in Europe. These organizations in turn allotted the tickets to individuals whose fare was paid by themselves or by relatives or friends.
