More than 6,000 Jews have been arrested in Berlin on the charge of allegedly violating the food regulations which deprive Jews of certain foodstuffs, it is reported in the Voelkischer Beobachter reaching here today.
The personal organ of Hitler trying to justify the introduction of the yellow Mogen David for Jews explains that this measure “will put an end to Jews obtaining such food articles as coffee, cocoa and others.” The fact that the Voelkischer Beobachter has found it necessary to indulge in apologetic comment in connection with the yellow badge indicates. that resentment against this measure is still felt by many Germans. The article also indicates that many German food stores went out of their way to sell forbidden food to Jews out of sympathy for the persecuted Jewish population, under the pretext that the owners of the stores did not know that their customers were Jews.
