B’nai B’rith Obtains 125 Torah Scrolls for Army Chapels

B’nai B’rith national defense committee obtained 125 Torah Scrolls for use in Jewish religious services at Army chapels throughout the country in a nationwide campaign launched before the United States was attacked by Japan, it was announced here today by Henry Monsky, B’nai B’rith president and chairman of its defense committee.

Of this number, 31 have been presented to and are in use at 28 different Army posts in the United States and Hawaii, 16 have been assigned to additional Army camps and Air bases in the United States and the Canal Zone and 78 are being held pending the completion of Army chapels and calls from the Jewish Welfare Board, through whose committee on religious affairs the Torah Scrolls are assigned and made available to Army chapels, Mr. Monsky stated. All of the Torah Scrolls obtained by B’nai B’rith were borrowed by its units from synagogues and temples for the duration of the emergency.
