Mr. Jacob Bleustein, chairman of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Dr. Louis Finkelstein, president of the Jewish Theological Seminary, and Prof. Salo Baron of Columbia University have been elected as new members of the Board of Directors of the American Friends of the Hebrew University, it was announced here today by Dr. A.S.W. Rosenbach, president.
The Board of Directors at their annual meeting in December adopted an emergency budget to raise $400,000 in the United States this year to cover the University’s wartime needs. Since the war the Hebrew University’s income has been cut by the destruction of Societies of Friends in European countries and by the loss of tuition fees of students who have been separated from their families and who are being granted tuition scholarships out of University funds.
A declaration of leading academicians and scholars of Great Britain acclaiming the Hebrew University in Jerusalem as a world influence providing a meeting place for the cultures of East and West, was released today by Dr. Rosenbach. The statement, which was received in a cable from Professor Norman Bentwich of London, points to the Hebrew University’s significance in keeping “the scientific flame burning clear and free in the Orient while the lamps are put out in the countries of Europe.” Special recognition is given to the war work being done by the Jerusalem University’s scientists.
