A Department of War Efforts Service has been formed by the National Jewish Welfare Board to coordinate and guide the war mobilization activities conducted by its 325 affiliated Jewish Centers and YMHA’s throughout the country, it was announced today by Frank L. Weil, president of the Board.
The program covers war relief, economic aid to the nation’s war effort, civilian protective activities and military morale work, and will operate collaterally with the Army and Navy service program of the Board. It stresses cooperation with federal and community agencies already established in the civilian defense and war efforts fields.
“We can be of assistance to the military establishment,” Mr. Weil said, “by providing in the communities in which we have affiliate organizations end Centers, selective service information and guidance, and by intensifying our U.S.O. army and navy welfare service. On the civilian protective front, we have offered our complete facilities and buildings for whatever use they can be put in furthering this work. Already, many of our centers have become the headquarters of air raid wardens, as well as serving as enlistment information centers and meeting places for aircraft spotters, auxiliary firemen, nurses aids, disaster canteens and motor corps.”
