Governor Charles Edison today signed a bill providing stiff penalties for war or public works contractors who refuse to employ a person because of race, color or creed. The maximum sentence was put at six months’ imprisonment and fine of $500.
“The central purpose for which we are fighting this war,” Mr. Edison said, “is to defend the rights of men as men. We are combatting nations and forces that seek to do the very things that this bill forbids.”
