Her Royal Highness the Princess Alice yesterday paid tribute to the Jewish people whose courage under suffering and persecution, she said, would always remain a subject of respectful wonder.
Speaking at a luncheon meeting of the Montreal Council of Hadassah held in the Mount Royal Hotel, Princess Alice said: “You have been in the war longer than any of us, for it was upon you that Hitler first declared his hate and let loose as soon as he came to power his unbridled fury. But the Jewish people had never lost heart despite extreme suffering, nor allowed the vision of their future freedom to be blurred.
“As we look back along the pages of your history,” she continued, “were not the Jewish people always at their best when most oppressed? Did not their greatest prophets, ‘Kings and seers arise when hope of release seemed beyond the bounds of possibility? It is the great fellowship of sacrifice among all the peoples opposed to the Nazi doctrine that is going to be the overwhelming power which alone can destroy this satanic possession of the thoughts and hearts of some of the human race.”
