British officers in charge of the Jewish Settlement Police today publicly lauded the organization and the character of the men. The members of the Jewish Settlement Police can play a leading part in the defense of the country against any surprise attack, these experts stated.
Their statements were made in connection with the transfer of the superintendent of this police force to another post. Many veteran settlers who were found too old or medically unfit for the Army, have joined the Settlement Police. They include about 200 members of Jewish colonies who have enlisted for special coastal patrol duty.
Turkish newspapers reaching here today ridicule the Axis promises to the Arabs that they will be granted independence. “It would be absurd to think that the Axis will permit African countries like Egypt, Palestine and Syria to be free after they have wiped off the map such countries as Czechoslovakia, Albania and others,” one Turkish paper writes. Another paper sarcastically asks whether there are still any people who believe Axis promises.
