Mass-deportation of Jews from Paris to Nazi-occupied territory in Eastern Europe started this week, following the drastic anti-Jewish orders issued by the Gestapo there, the correspondent of the Swedish newspaper Stockholm Tidningen reported today.
The report was substantiated in a broadcast today from Germany announcing that 20,000 Jews, the majority of them from Germany, Austria, Poland and Czechoslovakia, have been arrested in Paris since Wednesday for deportation to Eastern territories. Thousands of Jews were deported from Paris to Nazi-held Poland last December following attacks upon members of the German armed forces in occupied France.
The belief prevails here that the expulsion of Jews from Paris is being conducted by the German occupation authorities with the approval of Pierre Laval, chief of the French Government in Vichy. The correspondent of the Stockholm Tidningen says in his report that for the time being, Jewish men over 60 years of age and women over 45 will not be affected by the expulsion order. Jews who, for one reason or another, will not be deported for the time being, will be placed in internment camps awaiting deportation, he added.
