The contributions to the Allied war effort that have been made by Jews throughout the world and the activities of the Jews of Palestine, in particular, were lauded today in an editorial appearing in the newspaper “France,” official organ of the Fighting French, commenting on the meeting to protest Nazi atrocities held in Madison Square Garden in New York on Tuesday evening.
“It is natural that Jews who were the first victims of Hitler realize better than anyone else the necessity to put an end to the totalitarian barbarism,” the De Gaulle paper writes. “One must recognize with Prime Minister Churchill (who sent a message to the New York meeting) that they are conscious of their duties and have not spared any efforts to assure the triumph of the Allies.
“In Palestine particularly they have offered the closest collaboration to the British Government over since the outbreak of the war. Resolutions adopted at recent Jewish meetings have expressed the hope that the promises made by Lord Balfour after the last war will be fully kept on the morrow following this war.”
