A campaign by extremist sections of the orthodox groups in the Yishuv against the “desecration” of the Sabbath by motion picture theatres that begin to sell tickets and start their performances before nightfall on Saturday has precipitated several outbreaks of violence here.

On Saturday, a small group of Orthodox demonstrators before several of the cinemas were beaten up. That night two small bombs exploded outside the Orion and Zion theatres without causing any damage. The orthodox adherents charge that the “desecration” of the Sabbath is preventing the coming of the Messiah and consequently postponing victory.
