Documents recording the Nazi atrocities committed upon the civilian population in the Kalinin district, which was recaptured by the Russian Army, were published here today. The volume contains detailed information on the mass-executions of Jews and the merciless treatment by the Nazis of Jewish women and children. It establishes that poison gas was used by the Nazis to kill the latter.
The sufferings of the Jews under the Nazis and the heroism which they display at the Russian front and in the German rear, fighting in guerilla units, are recounted in poems written by leading Russian poets which are now widely recited at public gatherings throughout Russia. Especially popular is a poem on this theme written by Pavly Tichina, noted Ukrainian writer.
Twelve Jewish partisans including one woman, operating in the rear of the German armies, were decorated today by the Russian Government “for courage and lion’s bravery.” Their names are listed as Joseph Wierowitch, Samuel Sverdlow, Abraham Friedman, Abraham Vinokurow, Moishe Zaraisky, Nahum Kosowoy, Jacob Rochlin, Judah Freilich, Isaac Benzionow, Joseph Lapidas, Chaim Kushnir, and Miriam Rivkin.
The Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee headquarters here today made public a list of Jews evacuated from the Ukraine who have distinguished themselves in harvesting in the Saratov district on the Volga. Many elderly Jews and Jewish women evacuated from Nazi-devastated sections of Russia to the Volga district have also been placed at work in factories and in textile mills which are now working on a 24-hour basis. One can find in these factories Jews evacuated from Riga, Vitebsk, Kiev, Nikolaev, Bobruisk and other cities which fell into the hands of the Nazis, the Committee reported.
