The Free Synagogue announced today that it had granted the request of its founder and rabbi, Dr. Stephen S. Wise, for a leave of absence for the duration of the war. Dr. Wise explained that the pressure of other duties, including his leadership of the Jewish Institute of Religion, was responsible for his move. He said:
“I cannot and will not completely divorce myself from the work and program of the Synagogue which I founded 36 years ago. It will continue to have my deepest interest, and the members of the Council who are prepared to carry on with renewed energy and enthusiasm will be free to call upon me for counsel and cooperation whenever they choose to do so.”
