In an attempt to counteract the pastoral letter recently issued by a group of Slovakian bishops, in which they protested against the persecution of Jews, the Gardista, organ of the fascist Hlinka Guard and controlled by the anti-Semitic Minister of Interior, Sano Mach, has launched a new anti-Semitic campaign.
The newspaper demands that “privileged Jews,” who are exempt from deportation, be interned in labor camps, alleging that those Jews who have remained in the country “have caused demoralization by spreading alarming rumors.” It declares that most of those who pitied Jews when the mass-deportations began, no longer have any sympathy for them, and claims that “anti-Jewish feelings here have never been so strong.” This is at variance with recent reports in the pro-Nazi Slovakian press, which have lamented the fact that anti-Semitic sentiments among the people have decreased and that the anti-Jewish laws were being flouted.
