Greetings to Jewish soldiers in the Polish armed forces were issued here today, on the occasion of Rosh Hashonah, by Gen. Kazmierz Sosnkowski, Polish Commander-in-Chief, and Gen. Marjan Kukiel, Polish War Minister. A message of encouragement to the remnants of the Jews in occupied Poland was also issued by Dr. Ignacy Schwarzbart, Jewish member of the Polish National Council.
In his message to the Jewish servicemen, Gen. Kukiel emphasized “that a spirit of comradeship and brotherhood must prevail among the Polish soldiers irrespective of their origin and religion. Any appearance of religious and racial intolerance would be opposed to the law and to the service regulations.” Gen. Sosnkowski in his message pointed out that he “often expressed horror and condemnation of the inhuman brutalities inflicted by the German invader upon the Jewish population in Poland.”
In a broadcast tonight to the people of occupied Czechoslovakia, Jan Masaryk, Czechoslovak Foreign Minister, appealed to all Czechs and Slovaks to be of aid to the persecuted Jews. “Every nation is judged according to its attitude towards the Jews,” the Minister said in his broadcast. “I should like us to be able to say to our children and to the whole world after the war that we helped the Jews with all our strength and have remained decent even under German horror.”
