German authorities have begun registering all Jews in the Italian-held part of Greece for the purpose of making that section as “judenrein” as Salonica and other Greek cities which are under German occupation, it was reported here today from Rome.
At the same time the Swedish press predicts that a German drive against the Jews in Italy, along the same lines followed in Denmark, can also be expected. The prediction is made today following reports from Rome that the Jews in German controlled Italy are being blamed for Gen. Badoglio’s surrender. The reports revealed that the German authorities in Italy have already started rounding up Jewish refugees. Also that the Mussolini’s puppet cabinet issued an order that the anti-Jewish laws which were relaxed after the arrest of Mussolini be strictly enforced An unidentified broadcaster on the German-controlled Italian radio declared last night that the “new Italy” will punish all traitors, but the first who must pay will be the Jews. He added: “We do not demand any St. Bartholomew’s day, or pogroms, but in behalf of sufferers in our country, we demand that the Jews, who are implacable enemies of our race, our country and Fascism, be neutralized.”
On the other hand, the Italian radio stations which are under the control of the Anglo-American forces, today carried a broadcast announcing that Gen. Badoglio issued a circular order on September 22, addressed to Italian police authorities in the liberated part of Italy, informing them that measures have been taken to repeal all the anti-Jewish laws in the Italian territory under his jurisdiction.
GOEBBELS ATTACKS SWEDEN FOR INTERVENING FOR DANISH JEWS
Das Reich, organ of the German Ministry of Propaganda which reached here today, carries an article severely attacking Sweden for opening its doors to the Jews of Denmark. At the same time a high German official today bluntly stated here that “whether we win or do not win this war, there will not be a single Jew left in Europe and also very few Poles.”
It was also reported today that the deportation of the Jews of Denmark is under the supervision of Hitler’s Palestine-born commissar, Eichmann. Eichmann was born in the German colony of Saronah, a suburb of Tel Aviv, and speaks Hebrew.
The Dagens Nyheter, reviewing the situation in Denmark today, reports that three deportation vessels are still lying in the Copenhagen roadsteads outside the fortress of Provestenen, awaiting their cargo of Jews bound for Germany and Poland. The paper adds that arrested Jews are instructed to dress warmly, and to take along food for seven days. They are then dragged to the ships, where they are searched and all their valuables confiscated. The Copenhagen synagogue has been looted and its Torahs burnt, another local paper reports, adding that the Chief Rabbi has been put on board one of the deportation ships. It also discloses that Gestapo agents broke into a Jewish home where a woman was giving birth and shot seven persons. Among prominent Jews who are reported to have committed suicide is Professor Erik Warburg.
Meanwhile, the influx of refugees continues. Among those arriving here today are many prominent physicians and lawyers. Three wounded survivors of the sinking of a small fishing vessel also arrived. The boat that was carrying them capsized and eight of their number were drowned. The three were picked up by a Swedish naval vessel.
